  1. World pain - a wonderful phrase, especially since LJ just gobbled up my post that I spent 30 minutes composing.  I'll never reprise it all ::kicks stupid LJ::

  2. Feeling that inevitable letdown now that the semester is over, considering that if I wasn't a masochist and continuing to Honours, I could be graduating with my BA in July.  Why was it a good idea to continue?

  3. Was contacted by my possible Honours supervisor today - why do the following sentences fill me with academic terror - "GD contacted me about supervising your Honours thesis on Buffy and Veronica Mars. It would be great to meet up with you to hear more about your ideas and to discuss a forward plan."  Arrrggghhhh ... what have I gotten myself into?

  4. LJ cartharsis - if you think I'm incredibly boring and can't remember why you added me to your flist, please feel free to 'unfriend' me.  I won't be emotionally distraught or suicidal if you want to be set free of me - most days I'd like to be set free of me, so I completely understand and won''t hold it against you.

  5. I'm totally loving the new Dr Who, and yes I DO like David Tennant, regardless of his perceived faults.  I'm also mightily pleased that I've finally converted the offspring to Dr Who - he was just as pissed off with the words "to be continued" as I was!

  6. My 7 week hiatus from academia will be spent watching S2 Battlestar Galactica, The Lone Gunmen (finally available at a reasonable price for Region 4 dvd), Roswell (it's a thing, don't ask), S1 & S2 Veronica Mars and S1 & S2 Deadwood.

  7. I have nothing else - should probably go to bed.

Yikes

I hate writing essays.  I'm madly attempting to finish my last ever essay for my BA at the moment (due to be handed in by 5pm today) and I'm struggling.  If I press the word count button one more time it may explode.  I'm up to 1200, only need another 1300 ::sob::  Fidelity in text to screen adaptation looking at Shakespeare's Richard III plus Al Pacino's Looking for Richard plus Bridget Jones's Diary, the book and the movie, really is not a fun way to spend a rainy Monday.  I can only imagine what writing 15000 words for my Honours thesis will be like but at least this time I've chosen the texts.  I mean how easy will it be to write that many words about Buffy and Veronica Mars - it's doable, right, right ....

I'm also hoping that once this essay is complete that my eczema will disappear as I'm back on cortisone tablets to reduce the inflammation and itching.  Have a whole boatload of health things on hold at the moment that I must attend to very soon such as a pap smear and breastscreen, and possibly allergy testing if the welts turn out not to be nervous eczema.  Getting old is just great, and I still have menopause to look forward to - yea hah!!

Think I'll go bang my head against the desk for a bit longer, or possibly make lunch.

ETA: It's done, handed in with 10 minutes to spare.  It's nowhere need the word limit, but after 8 years I don't give a damn.  I only need 4/40 to get a Pass, so that's fine by me.

It's 4:30pm and instead of working on my final essay, I'm sitting at my desk staring out the window at the wonderful rain.  I honestly can't remember the last time it rained so heavily for so long - it's been absolutely pouring down for most of the day.  Hopefully other parts of the state are getting wet as well - 60% of New South Wales has been declared drought stricken.  Water restrictions now seem a way of life - always surprised when Mum mentions using the sprinkler to water the garden - we haven't been able to use sprinklers or wash cars with a hose for a couple of years now, and can only water by hand-held hose on Wednesdays and Sundays before 10am and after 4pm.   I've even taken to draining the rinse water from the washing machine onto the most stressed plants in the garden.

Have finally managed to get J to watch the newest incarnation of Dr Who.  He is thoroughly enjoying it - he particularly likes Christopher Ecclestone so will be interesting to see how he reacts to the regeneration.

Have nearly finished a re-watch of Veronica Mars S1 (just about to watch 1:17) - boy, did I miss a lot of action/dialogue on the dodgy video cds I burnt last year.   Lots of little things are falling into place, as they often do on a re-watch, but I'm also getting to see things or hear things because the file isn't skipping or out of synch. It really is worth the little more to burn the files to a dvd plus I don't have to spend hours converting avi files to mpeg because the programme on the laptop burns avi files direct to dvd.  Have no idea how or why, but am just happy that it does.

Thank you to those who wished J a happy birthday.  He had a reasonably quiet day.  I cooked one of his favourite meals for tea, Steak Dianne, and we had chocolate mudcake for dessert (courtesy of Michel's Patisserie).  Afterwards he went for a few drinks at a mate's place.  He got mostly money for presents, and I gave him Deadwood S2.

Oh well, enough of watching the rain, better go organise the evening meal.  Tonight it's nachos!

Apparently it's up to the student to chase up an Honours supervisor, so I've been busy e-mailing various English lecturers to find out who is available and who would be interested and who has the time. I got a reply back today from one of the recommended lecturers who unfortunately has a busy schedule, but he has spoken to another lecturer who apparently is keen to be my supervisor - Yay.  This is what he said in the e-mail:

"Your thesis sounds interesting - and fun. But I'm already quite busy with current Honours supervisions, so I've suggested to Graham that  Monique R  would be a suitable person to oversee your project. Monique's own research interests include American popular culture and TV, so she's an eminently appropriate supervisor. I've spoken to her about your thesis, and she's eager to talk to you about it. She'll contact you shortly to arrange a meeting."

So now I have to really think about the framing of my thesis topic beyond this half-arsed effort: "my possible thesis will be a textual comparison of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Veronica Mars looking closely at the differences/similarities between the female protagonists of each show, and various themes of high school/college life as represented on the shows."  Fifteen thousand words really isn't a lot to write in a year, is it?

Time zones tend to make me bamboozled.  It's the 25th here already, but hopefully it's still the 24th in the United States of America.

Happy Birthday

Had meeting with English Literature Honours Co-ordinator today. Looks like I'll be starting my Honours year in Spring Semester 2006 (WOOT!!), as long as I pass this last subject, that is. I've fulfilled the entry requirements in both my Eng Lit and Cultural Studies majors (qualified at University of Wollongong for the award of a relevant pass bachelor degree, with an average of at least 70% across the major in which the Honours degree will be undertaken, with the additional requirement of a Distinction in two subjects at 300 level in the specific major). So now I just need to decide if it will be a straight English or Cultural Studies Honours, or a cross discipline one.

We also discussed my possible subject for the Honours Thesis, and when I mumbled something about textual analysis of two TV shows, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Veronica Mars, and comparison of the female protagonists in a high school setting, he seemed quite enthusiastic about the topic, and felt I would have no difficulty in getting a supervisor for such a project (yippee!!! - I get to write about Buffy and Veronica, I so love academc studies today!!!!!!). We then went on to discuss Joss Whedon and Firefly (he's only just found out about the series) - I told him he must watch it, because of the self-referential and self-reflexive way that Joss deals with tropes of the western. Hey, I can sound mildly academically intelligent when I need to!

Sheesh, reality sets in ... 15,000 words on one topic ... gawd, what have I got myself into ...

Here's a poll to find out what you think, and make LJ happy because it keeps telling me I can creat a poll - so here it is.

[Poll #729757]

  1. My presentation at uni went well - pretty much made the 15 mins limit, without major panic attack, although my body broke out in major itchy welts.
  2. BM's job flux situation seems close to resolution, so he's much happier.
  3. Ma-In-Law seems mostly stable at the moment.
  4. J seems to be in a good mental place at the moment.

AND FAR MORE IMPORTANTLY ...

The Beaconsfield miners got out this morning, after fourteen days trapped underground, it's bloody amazing - go you good things!!!!  Plus they're enjoying a beer at their local pub tonight - the Aussie spirit is pretty indomitable.  Hearing that news this morning before I went to uni pretty well set the mood for my day.

I'm in some weird medical cyclical hell - if I'm not suffering from some form of bronch/sinus/tonsil-itis, I'm covered in allergic spots.  So at the moment my cough is improving, but I'm now breaking out in itchy red spots all over.  Maybe the spots are psychological - J has a selection exam / interview for an apprenticeship tomorrow, and I have a presentation for uni next week (which I loathe and detest - me and public speaking - so NOT mixy).  Obviously my internal stress is becoming a physical entity.

Have enjoyed watching my shows this week (thank you Optus for my new downloading capacity) - I've tried not to spoil anyone.

- Dr Who rocked.  I got all teary seeing Sarah-Jane and K-9.
- Gilmore Girls - hmmm ... so it is true about the main actors, they don't even appear on screen together anymore.  Is there going to be a 6th season?
- Veronica Mars - OK, what's left for the season finale?  Pleased to see I actually figured out a plot device before it was revealed (Go Me!) - the hair that BBC (that's Big Breasted Charisma) collected from Logan's shower, played an important role ...

Still downloading the new Lost - will catch it tomorrow.

Off to bed early so I can get J up in time for his appointment tomorrow ::fingers, toes etc crossed::

Boy, am I sick of being sick - feels like I've had the flu since February.  Have another bout of sinusitis and bronchitis, and am again on antiobiotics.  I think my immune system must be shot to hell - maybe it's part of getting old and decrepit, and I still have menopause to look forward to - can hardly wait.

Consequently my two week uni break has, in no way, been as productive as I would have liked - between bathroom renovation chaos and the flu from hell, I have not even managed to finish reading the book I'm presenting on, let alone start working on my presentation.  Least I've got another week to go - hopefully the antibiotics will kick in in a day or so, and I won't feel like hacking up a lung all the time.  In the meantime I have to watch Bridget Jones Diary for this afternoon's lecture (and there's a phrase I never thought I would write!!).

Finally managed to find a reasonable torrent of the latest Dr Who (13 minutes to go!!!!!!), so will treat myself to that this afternoon ::yummy, yummy Mr Tennant::  Off to doing some shopping.

Bloody Hell!!  I never realised we were subscribed to so much e-mail stuff until I started to painstakenly go through all the subscriptions and change over to our new e-mail address.  Internet banking, mailing lists, Amazon, uni accounts, Photobucket, Yahoo groups, etc etc etc.  Upside of my tired eyes is that I have seriously reduced the amount of spammish crap that comes into our inbox.  Downside is that I've probably forgotten to change something really important.  Oh well, that's life.

Have been busy downloading stuff on our new plan - latest Dr Who (which d/l in about 30 minutes, and made me one happy little downloader), Veronica Mars 2:20 (no comment, because I'm still spitting chips over that one) and just because I can now, Gilmore Girls ::hugs 60 gigabyte download limit, spits on old 10 gigabyte plan::   Have instruction from the boy to search out new eps of Family Guy, American Dad and Drawn Together.

J has just left to travel up to Sydney tonight with a carload of mates to see what will probably be a delightful show featuring the mellifluous tones of KORN, Disturbed, Hatebreed and 10 Years ::shudder::    They're staying overnight as well, at an hotel near the stadium. A few hours of peace ... no X-Box or Farscape (he's in the middle of a Farscape-a-thon, 2 seasons down, 2 to go) booming out of his room, and none of that stuff he calls music making my ears bleed.

I think a quiet evening watching Dr Who and sipping a few cold ales is a definite possibility.

Have broken out in some gigantic allergy, so have itchy spots all over torso and legs.  Can't work out what it is a reaction to - haven't changed washing powder/soaps etc.  The danger of the internet, of course, is the self diagnosis one can make through a bit of indiscriminate Googling.  I have been eating quite a lot of rockmelon lately, and apparently that can trigger an allergic reaction.  Can't think of any other dietary change - very weird, but I most definitely have the spots to prove otherwise.  Am now on prednisone tablets & cream, and hayfever tablets as well.  Hopefully this will do something because the itching is driving me berserk.  Maybe it just another sign of getting old - your body falls apart on you. ::heavy, heavy sigh::

Easter break coming up - BM is heading down the coast to a mate's holiday 'block' tomorrow with said mate, and I'm following with mate's wife on Saturday for overnight stay.  Convivial company, good food, and much wine - should be an enjoyable break away from home.

Best wishes to every one during this weekend, to those who celebrate Easter or Passover, or those who will just have a gigantic chocolate-gasm.  Safe and happy travelling to anyone taking a break.

In our move to change ISPs, we had to put all the phone/internet accounts into one name.  Does anyone think that disconnecting the phone AND internet is necessary for this to happen - well, apparently it is, and it was supposed to happen simultaneously.  Telstra, in its infinite wisdom TURNED OFF our broadband connection yesterday (it was supposed to be today), and after numerous calls from me today, won't be able to be switched on until tomorrow.  So it can be turned off in an instant, but requires an order to be placed, and 48 hours of waiting, before it can be turned back on.  Am I more than a little frustrated - you betcha baby.  Has my voice gone from patient, to terse, to when the hell are you going to do something about this - that would be a big YES.  How will my frame of mind be when I ring at 8pm tonight to place 'my order' for the reconnection, and they tell me, why no we can't do that tomorrow.  My friends in the States and Britain may hear my screams at 8:05pm.

To add to my frustration I had to do get some info off the 'net for uni, so have dragged myself to the uni library, thinking that maybe I could use the laptop and the library wireless network - after the nice young man helped the doddery old fool (yes, I am being sarcastic) to load the required tutorial to connect to the wireless network and then spending another 15 mins trying to understand the IT gobbledegook, I  relented and waited in line for a uni computer.  So here I am!!  Pissed off, bloody furious, and looking for someone to take it out on ... come in spinner!

Better get the info I need and get home.  One for the road ... GGGRRRRRR!!!! AAARRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!

Obviously I need to write more essays in which I don't understand the question, because I just got back the one I was so freaked out about, and I ended up with 84%.  Weird as ...

I'm quietly enjoying this subject, although I'm still attempting to wrap my mind around the process, and meaning, of adaptation.  What makes a successful adaptation - is it faithfulness to the original text, or something more; can you make a successful adaptation by completely changing the cardinal functions (the main aspects of the narrative/plot); is it only successful if it is seen as a new text, rather than a secondary text, in comparison to the original; why do an adapation at all?  Hopefully I'll have the answers to all this (and more!) when I go to write the final essay for this subject (which will be my final, final, final essay for my BA).

Now back to the mundanity of domestic life.
downunderdeb: (Spike-btvs03 by red_sunflower)
Can I just say that Richard III (or al least Shakespeare's Richard III) is one skanky, conniving arsehole, or as Queen Margaret describes him:

Thou elvish-marked, abortive, rooting hog,
Thou that wast sealed in thy nativity
The slave of nature and the son of hell.
Thou slander of thy heavy mother’s womb.
Thou loathèd issue of thy father’s loins.
Thou rag of honour, thou detested—

I thoroughly enjoyed Al Pacino's Looking for Richard.  I think it is very successful in making the play more 'accessible' to the audience, because the play is one bloody confusing piece of work, unless you're an expert on the Houses of York, Lancaster and Tudor, which I most definitely am not.  Pacino also does a very clever job of paralleling the play's characters with his own 'cast' - himself as the director, his producers, his staff, his actors etc etc.  The only bad thing is the casting of Lady Anne - I have liked Winona Ryder is a few things (Heathers, Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael) but she really is out of place here.  Now onto Bridget Jones and her flippin' diary ...
